Last week I met Nadene Pita. She’s an amazing person by all accounts. I like to meet people first and get to know them a bit before I photograph them. Find out what makes them tick, what are their influences, objectives and motivations for past, present and future, especially if they are musicians. Nadene is not your usual singer, writer and performer. She has a varied background and it reflects in her varied music styles.
I was asked to take her portraits for promotion of her new Album and concert. She is a jazz singer by trade. Her new album has 2 themes, one of which is “dislocation” form her normal world. we talked over coffee the day before about her, her influences in music, her new album, what it meant to her and what she was achieving… then I just listened to her music and started sketching up ideas to portray her music and her themes… I think some photos come as a result from conversation, relationship, and as photographers we discover and tell the story. I took lots of photos but felt good about the direction and what we were doing… I feel contented when this happens and thoroughly exhausted afterwards. I hope that all makes sense.
Lisa Tolcher helped me in this shoot. Lisa is a young brilliant artist who feels at home with a pen, pencil, brush or camera. She is a breathe of fresh air hailing originally from Canberra where she is well known around the live music circuits. I met Lisa at a Factory gig where I was taking photos with my hasselblad and she tackled me and tried to nab my blad
She will go far I am sure.
Here are some black & white images of Nadene as well.
