Anneliese

76:19. Anneliese is a lovely widowed woman. She and her husband, Ernst, came from Germany in 1955. They have been clients for 26 years. In our last meeting we talked about life and she produced her husbands lovely old Rolleiflex camera. It is in beautiful condition. Ernst was a jeweller by trade and also made his own clocks, some are hanging in the background. It’s my privilege to know them all these years. I asked if she would permit a photo from my camera and she willingly obliged.

Australian Photography & Gallery Compendium 2011

The inaugural Australian Photography and Gallery Compendium will be launched this Wednesday night

6.00pm to 8pm
Wednesday 13th July

at Meyer Gallery
269 Bourke Street, Darlinghurst NSW
(between Liverpool St & Stanley St)

It will be a valuable and collectable publication. At the close of each year, it will accept photographic artists who exhibited in the previous year, represented by a defining image of their contemporary work in a collectable, fine-art format. Year on year, the Compendium will build a record of contemporary art photography and galleries, tracing the journey of Australian art photography for generations to come.

I’ve been fortunate to have a photo published.

Here are the 8 only photos taken of Fiona back in 2008.

Recently I have been privileged to photograph behind the scenes of a short film. Met these lovely people over a weekend and followed them around talking and photographing. Can’t say too much just now but would love to later when it’s all done.  Here are some of the main characters.

Peter and the F3

This is just a short note to show some more photos of Peter. I was asked yesterday why I take so many pictures of Peter. It’s part of knowing people, as I just take photos of people in normal conversation. Daily life. True documentary. I picked up a cheap as new Nikon F3 a while ago. I’ve kept my old nikkor lenses from the 70′s. My old Fm is still working too. These two images are shot on Fomapan 400asa film I get from Blanco Negro. I used my old 50mm nikkor F2 lens here.

Keeping It Simple: Media Training – CuriousWorks

I am helping (with a few photos) the wonderful people at CuriousWorks in Surry Hills. I really admire their professionalism and their work. Please take a close look at what they are doing Australia-wide.

CuriousWorks

Keeping It Simple: Media Training

You don’t need a whole lot of money or a degree in computing or communications to have a voice on the internet. Websites, videos, blogs, podcasts, twitter feeds, facebook pages – all are achievable with a budget of $0 and whatever computer/multimedia tools you have handy. Sometimes you just need a little guidance to get you started, and then you’re off fulfilling your web publishing dreams!

This is why we started the Creative, Online and Social Media Intensive Training course at CuriousWorks, to give individuals and organisations a kick start and the right advice to be able to sustainably build their own web presence or multimedia for minimal cost.

It has been very cool indeed getting to work with a variety of non-profits and activists. Recently we’ve had members of Studio Artes, a non-profit focused on working with adults with disabilities, come in to learn how to create a new website showcasing some of the great artwork being produced by their group. The Studio Artes staff had no advanced web skills, but over the course of a few sessions they were able to start constructing their website and learning how to keep it updated well into the future. The new “Studio Artists” site is still under construction, but it’ll be a very cool one to check out!

Thank to Matt Sutton for the photo

my story about Peter

Over the past 3 years I have simply taken photos of a mate near where I live. I moved with no friends in this area and Peter befriended me when I was at the local pub having a beer or a meal on my own. He introduced me to his friends, the local colourful people from the area, some with very colourful backgrounds. But people there are real and they genuinely take an interest in you. Peter noticed I always had a camera with me. He was a photographer years ago and we’d often talk about cameras, light, processing techniques and overall he made me feel welcome into this new community.

This is my attempt to document his life through photos that have been taken merely as a consequence of getting to know him during conversations. No photo was every staged not setup. All of them are as a result of a conversation, gaining trust and friendship.

Over the three years I have seen clear visible changes in Peters face and body. Through injury and self-abuse he has become skin and bone.

In 2009 he helped me enormously in a personal major change in my life when I married. He was extremely generous and kind from the little that he had. I will never forget that.

The other day I bumped into him while taking an evening walk with my camera. He was back from a trip and selling second-hand bikes to make some money. We walked and talked and stopped for a while and I caught some more photos of him. My desire is to document his life.

I remember when I was younger I would make a large birthday portfolio for my school friends of photos I had taken in those early years and present it as a 21st present. I’ve lost contact with them and I hope they have kept those 21st cards I made. Here are few photos of Peter that I hope one day will “immortalize” him (as he said in his own words). I will add to this set everyday as long as I can.

I do fear for Peter’s safety. I feel he is his own worst enemy. He has a heart of gold though. He is going through some major life threatening circumstances lately.

I am presenting with 2 musicians, Dec 11th.

December Twist: A feast for all your senses

December’s Twist is the second in our Saturday night series, combining an EP launch and a gallery exhibition. Celebrate the final Twist of 2010 with us, in a night of evocative indie music and beautiful film photography.

Two singer songwriters, Chris Muir and Neto, will be vending their alternative and ambient indie wares. Joining them will be a series of beautiful portraits and streetscapes by black and white stills photographer, Matt Sutton.

As always, all the money raised goes towards empowering disadvantaged communities across Australia to have a self-defined, sustainable voice.

8-11pm, Sat 11 December
$10 (tax deductable) donation
402/11 Randle St
Surry Hills
Tix from http://decembertwist.eventbrite.com or at the door
Directions: http://www.curiousworks.com.au/contact/

The evening will act as an EP Launch for Chris Muir through indie label Terrace Records. Chris Muir spent last year playing gigs, recording and writing in Italy, Germany and France. His roots however, are firmly planted in Sydney where he grew up. He has recently had success in America, one of his tracks picked up a themesong to nationally screened TV Program Roadtrip Nation. You may have also heard him on Triple J recently. www.myspace.com/muirchris

Matthew Sutton is a Sydney based photographer. He has been focused on analogue film photography for many years with a short digital hiatus. He enjoys the medium of black and white everyday life photography. Matthew has exhibited 3 times in the past 5 years and recently presented a collection of portraits and streetscapes hand printed on selenium toned fibre paper prints. “I try to portray what I see through how I feel.” www.mattsuttonphotography.com.au

Chris Neto hails from Sydney’s Western Suburbs. Discovering music as a latent talent fused with a natural passion, he creates folk tunes with a touch of ambience to keep things interesting. Chris has been slowly building his profile around Sydney, and has played at the Metro Theatre, the Gaelic Club, The Basement, and many other venues. Chris enchants listeners with thought-provoking lyrics that take you away with the warble of his voice. http://www.myspace.com/chrisneto

This fundraiser will be held under a NSW fundraising certificate at the CuriousWorks HQ.
